Chatham is based near to the River Medway and it was originally built to house those with links to the dockyards and army barracks grow. This area is a great maritime destination with a history stretching back over 400 years. The Lord Nelsons HMS Victory was built here and Charles Dickens also lived here for some time.
As the dockland industry declined the area took on a new purpose and now offers a high quality of life in safe and affordable communities. It is a superb transport hub for those using the railway system or roads, and tourism is a key feature. Chatham offers the Royal Engineers Museum, Upnor Castle that protected the Queens warships, plus Capstone Country Park. It has a community feel and those communities are strengthen by the residents loyalty to the area.
